Our Know Your Farmer for this week is 30-year-old Mohammed Danjuma Yusuf, Lavun local government area of Niger state. He said farming is an occupation he was born into because he has been farming since the age of 8 when he followed his parents to the farm but as he grew older it became a business for him and it has been a source of income. So, he has been practicing agriculture for over 20 years. He currently cultivates six and the half hectares of land where he grows rice, sorghum and melon.

He states that farming is very profitable and it gets better as the years roll by when you have more knowledge and experience. When asked if he would allow anyone he knows to go into farming, he said Yes, because the profit margin is much if you really know what you are doing

When asked if he had faced any challenges, he said the issue of buying quality seeds and getting the genuine agro-chemicals. Also lack of readily available market thus they cannot quickly raise money for the next harvest season. He wants the government to help fix roads that links their village to other villages to make it easier to move goods from one market to the other.

His advice to intending farmers is that, they should learn and be patient because farming sometimes do not go as expected but, in most cases, it is a highly profitable business.
